Biography Atreya
NL - ES

Atreya was born in the nineteen seventies soon after her Spanish parents had migrated to Yverdon,
a beautiful Swiss village near Geneva. Atreya grew up in the French area and she consequently could easily express herself both in the French and Spanish language.

Atreya's artistic skills definitely run in her family, her ancestors were already keen on the arts; music was always present in her life. Her father, born in Andalusia in the province of Malaga in southern Spain, possessed a splendid voice in his youth and a natural taste for Flamenco. We can say that Atreya's talents, as well as her temperament can be traced back to her heritage. Her mother on the other hand who was born in Madrid, the capital of Spain, was more focused on literature and her prodigious poetic gifts. Ever since she was a child she wrote poems and prose, but she also loves opera. Born into this kind of ambience there is no doubt that Atreya, like her only brother, had a strong tendency towards music. Her brother, who has equal artistic talents, has developed himself as a professional songwriter and plays drums and guitar. He owns a remarkable music store in Castellón along the Spanish coast; please follow the link on this site for more information about this. The young Atreya was very much influenced by her brother, together they listened to rhythm and blues as well as rock and she learned to admire bands such as Pink Floyd and Supertramp and a few French female vocalists like Veronique Sanson and France Galle. Later on she listened to The Doors.

At the age of four Atreya started discovering her vocal skills and got pretty fond of singing and dancing all around the house, but dreamt of becoming a professional figure-skating star. At the age of seven Atreya moved to Spain with her family and settled down in the artistic city of Barcelona. Years later, in the heat of the Mediterranean sun, Atreya slowly entered the city's nightlife. Bands such as AC/DC, Whitesnake, Iron Maiden and the Spanish band Baron Rojo taught her the tougher side of rock 'n roll. By going to concerts of U2, Simple Minds,Tears for Fears and Spandau Ballet the now teenage Atreya soon gained the magic feeling of live-music. From here on she identified herself with sounds of The Cure and electronic melodies, amongst these Depeche Mode. The Eurythmics, Prince and Tracy Chapman also left their imprints on Atreya's compositions. In time, when she discovered soul music, her interest in singing increased thanks to female vocalists like Esther Phillips, Joan Armatrading and Nina Simone.

While dancing on frozen water Atreya started to pay more and more attention to the structure of the songs coming from the loudspeakers at the ice-skating rink and eventually she swapped her skates for a guitar. She decided to take lessons on this instrument, which from now on was to accompany her in song writing. The following years were dedicated to studying the theory of music as well as singing lessons. Thanks to her teacher Atreya discovered her soprano voice and she learned to control the different tones, increasing her love for aca'pella songs. After finishing high school Atreya's parents would have liked to see her go to college, but Atreya had made up her own mind to do all she could to become a professional singer. She took on every available job in Barcelona until she had enough money to buy large speakers, a professional mixer and her own microphone. While avoiding the discussions at home, Atreya went her own

versatile way. Later she entered the eccentric jazz and blues bars and gained experience through joining in with jam sessions all over the city. Atreya's parents, always only having wanted what was best for their daughter gradually changed from being opposed to the career she was making in the music industry to becoming supportive. She became a member of various rock bands; eventually this led to her forming her own band. Unfortunately most bands have to deal with problems such as different levels of dedication and varying degrees of interest amongst their members, Atreya's bands were no exception. With all her good intentions Atreya slowly left the idyllic idea of her own band behind her and over the following years her aspiration to become a solo artist grew.

Atreya started concentrating on writing her own songs with the aim to eventually have these released. Great influences at that time were the Spanish rock band Heroes del Silencio, Texas and Heather Nova with her peculiar voice. Now she listens to different artists; voices like Sinnead O'Connor, Tori Amos, Portishead, groups such as Skunk Anansie(Skin), K's Choice and more electronic music like Massive Attack, Faithless, Muse, Placebo, Editors, The Prodigy and many others.

Atreya
Offering her voice and songs to the music industry didn't motivate Atreya much at the time due to its commercial aspect. The making of profit to the detriment of quality music and the personality of the artist was something Atreya was thus also forced to deal with.

Thanks to her attractive image and contacts in Barcelona's bubbling nightlife, she became a gogo dancer in the trendiest discotheques of the city. It was at this moment that she met her present Dutch boyfriend in the party scene. The distance between Amsterdam and Barcelona made Atreya decide to move north, where she discovered new possibilities as the economical and employment prospects were much better than in Spain. While she very much missed the warm Spanish climate she learned English as well as the difficult Dutch language, started to study human resource management and worked in a variety of jobs without ever having the feeling that she was doing something that she really wanted.
Together with a Dutch producer Atreya initiated the world-famous commercial music project participating merely with her voice as once again she refused
to sell her image to superficial music and deny her true self. It was not until a trip to Nepal and North India, where she met the Dalai Lama, that she was inspired to start a new musical episode in her life. With the launch of the single: "Aware!", Atreya nobly hopes to support the Tibetans in their harsh struggle for survival as well as all those in need, who suffer from the violation of human rights in general. She is the manager and one of the 2 initiators of Project Aware!. She produced the videoclip Aware! several times in The Box to see. If this project proves successful, the breakthrough of her musical career and direction as a human being will then be seen as a by-product.
She's working now with 2 men tall, a project of 2 men, David her bas player and Dj Megalito, making electronic music.
